Despite of its former plan to reduce the dependency of energy on nuclear, Japan released a new draft government plan to utilize the nuclear energy as much as possible. The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry presented the draft plan, a medium- to long-term policy guideline which the Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s Cabinet is expected to approve in coming February.
It was estimated in the draft plan that the nuclear power would cover around 20% of the total energy usage capacity of Japan in 2040 and this was based on the assumption that around 30 reactors, or the majority of existing ones, will be restarted.
As part of such efforts, utilities will be able to replace reactors which are to be replaced with next-generation reactors on the premises of any of their plants, according to the draft.
